Riding with the Juke Joint Kings is the band's second album, following on from their highly praised debut 'Live at the Stonemasons'.

The influence of the pioneering electric Chicago blues of the 40s and 50s is clear from the opening track, Riding With The Juke Joint Kings (telling the story of how the band was formed) through to the closing track 'End of the Line' (a fictionalised account of the singer's struggle with vices in his formative years and ongoing battle with temptation).

Soul and rock influences can also be heard, but not such that the band moves away from electric harp and guitar driven blues and remains true to its influences from the golden period of Chess, Veejay and other great blues labels.

CD comes in card wallet featuring photography by Paul Laybourne of a storm brewing over the train station of the band's home town.

Riding with the Juke Joint Kings There was a lonely stone mason chipping on a block of stone, Put out an ad ‘Grumpy drummer seeks blues band, please telephone’ Now he’s beatin’ on the skins, and he’s smilin’ everywhere he goes. ‘Cos when your riding with the Juke Joint Kings, You can forget about everything, Forget your worries for another day, ‘cos tonight we’re all here to play, Clap you hands or shout and sing, Because you’re riding with the Juke Joint Kings There was a hot train driver, driving folks from town to town, Picked up a cool harp player, soon they were Chicago Bound, Now they’re riding all the tracks, wearing smiles instead of frowns. ‘Cos when your riding with the Juke Joint Kings, You can forget about everything, Forget your worries for another day, ‘cos tonight we’re all here to play, Clap you hands or shout and sing, Because you’re riding with the Juke Joint Kings There was a man and wife watching life just pass them by, Said ‘if we don’t get out, we’re gonna ride this rut until we die’, So they joined a blues band, now they’re always on a high. ‘Cos when your riding with the Juke Joint Kings, You can forget about everything, Forget your worries for another day, ‘cos tonight we’re all here to play, Clap you hands or shout and sing, Because you’re riding with the Juke Joint Kings STOP THAT TRAIN!

Some People 03:30
Some People Some people, say we shouldn’t play the blues, Some people, say you shouldn’t play the blues We had our share of trouble; I know we’ve paid our dues. When I was just a little boy, I didn’t understand, I saw my father on the corner, With a suitcase in his hand; The blues stole my childhood, And I became a man Some People Some people, say we shouldn’t play the blues, Some people, say you shouldn’t play the blues We had our share of trouble; I know we’ve paid our dues. Working in the stoneyard; body’s aching every day, Got babies of my own to feed, I got my bills to pay, But I’ve been walking with the blues so long, I don’t know no other way Some people, say we shouldn’t play the blues, Some people, say you shouldn’t play the blues We had our share of trouble; We got nothing left to lose.

Big Mouthed Dog Now we’ve been friends a long time Since we were little kids, You’ve got the dirt on me And I know the things you did; But lately something’s changed And things just ain’t the same. My phone calls go unanswered, (and) I don’t think you’re to blame. It started when you brought it home, And just keeps getting worse; When I call for you, I swear, I hear the front door curse. You’d better get that dog under control, If you know what’s good for all our souls, You’d better get that dog under control, Tell it; wind your neck in, shut your hole. Now, we go way on back, But I’m tired of been barked at; (you better) Get your stupid, ugly, big-mouthed dog under control. I’m not saying I’m an angel, But I’m not Satan too, You can’t keep blaming me, For the stupid stuff we do, We ain’t little kids, Men need to make amends; Apologising to folks, don’t mean you have to be best friends. There is no need, for no-one else, To say what’s on our mind. It’s just respect for you, that stopped me kicking it’s behind. Been barking at my mother, And growling at my wife, It bared its teeth at grandma’s house, That kind of thing ain’t nice. Don’t seem to have no class, Got the manners of a hog, You need to make a call, Loose kith and kin, Or train that dog.

Boilerman Blues He’s the Boilerman, Sparks are gonna fly, He’s the boilerman, Sparks are gonna fly. If you wanna get real hot, Just give him a try. If your pressure keeps on building, And you feel it’s all too much If your pressure keeps on building, And you feel it’s all too much He can help you let off steam, He’s got the magic touch. He’s the Boilerman, Sparks are gonna fly, He’s the boilerman, Sparks are gonna fly. If you wanna get real hot, Just give him a try His baby she’s so icy, No matter what he do His baby she’s so icy, No matter what he do She won’t let him turn the heat up, And it’s making him so blue. He’s the Boilerman, Sparks are gonna fly, He’s the boilerman, Sparks are gonna fly. If you wanna get real hot, Just give him a try.

Jerking my love Around You build me up You slap me down Why you always doggin’ me around? Well babe I don’t know what to do, Can’t you see that I love you? You lead me on like I’m some kind of hound, Well baby, lately I have found, you’re only jerkin’ my love around I treat you nice, You know I’m keen, The way you make me look, it’s so obscene, You got me wearing out the floor, Pacing here at your back door, Hey let me in, stop treating me so mean, Yeah baby, lately I have found you’re only jerkin’ my love around Well if you think, That I’m your fool, Ain’t gonna let you take me back to school, I’m tired of Fifty Shades of Grey, I want some colour in my day, I think I know what I am gonna do, And baby soon you will have found, you ain’t jerkin’ my love around.

End of the Line Well my mother did her best to bring me up right, Before I climbed aboard that train; Your father will be waiting at the end of the line, Just you be good on the way. Well I set me down, and I looked around, And the folks was the homely kind, ‘long comes a man, ticket gun in hand; Calling ‘tickets for the end of the line?!’ We’re all riding on that train; riding to the end of the line. I raised my hand, and said “I think I am”, And his smile was plain to see; (Said) “That ain’t your seat, get up on your feet (boy), Now just you come with me.” Well that next carriage was all full of liquor, He said “drink ‘til you’ve had your fill”; (and) Though I knew I mustn’t, I surely couldn’t, Stop drinking ‘til I felt ill. (whoo) I was riding on that train; I had a ticket to the end of the line I staggered through from carriage three from two, Full of ladies saying they’d be my friend; Stopped calling my honey, when they’d spent my money, And the train when around the bend. (well) the man with the ticket gun came back, and he led me through the door. Sat me down at a poker table, Said “You’ll be a winner here for sure!” Yeah, I was riding on that train; riding to the end of the line. Well I said “Hey mista, I spent my money”, He said “don’t worry son; You can borrow mine, if you sign this line. Pay me back when you have won” Well my mother’s words, they came back to me, And I fled to the holy kind; Hid me under a coat from that snake eyed goat, Punching tickets for the end of the line. (you can run but you can’t hide) “You’re riding on my train; (you ain’t fooling no one boy) you got a ticket to the end of the line!” They got off at the station, some town called Salvation, So I thought I’d take a lookee-see; I called my father about the things I’d one, And he said that he’d forgiven me. From that day then to this day now, I decided I would walk the line. But every now and then that train comes by, Shouting “tickets for the end of the line?!” “You can ride upon my train; ride to the end of the line”

about

Drawing on influences from the electric blues of the 40s and 50s, as well as more current artists such as The Cashbox Kings and Red Devils, Riding with the Juke Joint Kings' electric guitar and harp driven blues has everything from soulful ballads to soaring solos and jumping toe tappers.

Each track was in a single studio take (all vocals and instruments simultaneously) with the exception of the slide guitar, which was laid down later, to give the album the energy of a live recording without compromising the sound quality.
